There are many ways to promote conservation when building a new home or renovating an older one.

  • Use sustainable and/or recycled materials. A sustainable material is one that uses natural resources without destroying the ecological balance of an area. Wood from an FSC-certified forest would be an example of a sustainable material.
  • Conserve water & electricity.. You can conserve water by installing low-flow shower heads and toilets... which, contrary to when they first came out, work great. To save electricity, you can use electrical appliances that are Energy-Star rated and compact fluorescent light bulbs that use seventy-five percent less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs.
  • Build "not so big" homes.
